 Welcome to the Ralph McQuarrie concept SLAVE ONE webpage.  Nilo-Rodis-Jamero also deserves credit for this concept design, but the main illustration I took inspiration from is the Ralph McQuarrie painting seen below.  Ralph has always been a hero to me!  His designs revolutionized the space industry (illustrations for NASA) and, of course, the blockbuster movie industry.   This page features one of his unused CONCEPT DESIGNS - the Slave One.

  Slave One underwent several iterations in the design phase.  This particular pre-production concept painting is the only illustration, as far as I know, of this particular design.  I think it's wonderful and demonstrates part of a long design history for this spacecraft.  Being the only view we have, I had to use a lot of creative liberty while designing the rest of the ship.

While 3D sculpting this I carefully analyzed his painting, and channeled the ILM model maker aesthetic while inventing the unseen portions.  I used a digital 'kit bashing' technique, a virtual representation of the same process the ILM model makers would utilize if they were building a filming model based on this painting. You can see from looking at the under-belly greebie detailing that I took inspiration from the filming model.

• CANOPY (resin cast in clear material) (there are TWO versions of the canopy)
• SCALE FIGURE (classic and pre-production detailing)
• UNDER-HULL DETAIL INSET (contains 3 engines and details sculpted in place)
• OPTIONAL ROUND ENGINE INSET PIECES (can be printed in clear)

The parts inventory on the bottom have been updated and separated even further to make 3D printing, painting, and assembly even easier. 

 HOW IT WAS MADE:

Here you can see how I first blocked in the basic shapes, then started sculpting detail forms.

Several weeks were spent evolving the shapes and details.
